Where does the term “Dixie” come from?

The term comes from Louisiana. “Dixie” refers to currency first issued in the New Orleans French Quarter by Citizens State Bank, and later by other Louisiana banks. The $10 notes were labeled “Dix” on the opposite side (which means 10 in French). Southerners called these notes “Dixies”, and the French-speaking areas around Louisiana, including New Orleans, became known as “Dixieland.” As time passed, the word expanded to describe to Southern states, in general.
